Garmin® Unleashes Next-Generation Astro® GPS Dog Tracking Collar - NEW, August 2010
Garmin International is pleased to announce the new DC 40 transmitter for the Astro dog tracking system. The DC 40 combines a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with a VHF antenna, all in one small transmitter. A bright orange polyurethane collar makes for great visibility, extreme durability, and easy maintenance so you can focus on the hunt. The redesigned charging contacts are flush with the unit so they don't get clogged with dirt and mud. A new flashing LED-charging indicator lets you know when the battery is charged and ready to go. You can mount an e-collar receiver next to the DC 40 on the same collar, eliminating the need for two collars on the dog. A collar lock option uses a four-digit PIN number that helps prevent others with Astro receivers from tracking your dog's whereabouts. Get into the hunt with the DC 40!
"The refinements that are found in the new DC 40 are the result of feedback from hunters and trainers," said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. "The new collar is more convenient and more durable than ever. Whether purchasing an Astro for the first time or upgrading from an older model, sporting dog owners will love the refinements that are packed into the new DC 40."
Introducing Astro 220, the first high-sensitivity GPS-enabled dog tracking system for hunters and sportsmen. The Astro 220 system includes a bright color-screen handheld GPS device and includes the newest, upgraded DC-40 transmitter collar (replacement for the DC 30). This unique system pinpoints your dog’s position and shows you exactly where he is and what he's doing - running, pointing, or treeing - even when you can’t see or hear him, when he's in dense cover, and up to seven miles away, depending on terrain.
Attach Collar and Go
The Astro GPS Dog Tracking System requires very little configuration straight out of the box, and is extremely simple to use. Once the transmitter and receiver acquire a GPS signal, the receiver automatically lets users know the location of their dog. There are no subscriptions or setup fees required to use the device.
Track Dogs in Dense Cover
As often as every 5, 10, 30 or 120 seconds (user selectable), your dog’s DC-40 transmits his position to your handheld. And you can see his current location and a trail of where he’s been on the Map page of your handheld. Switch over to the "Dog Tracker" page to view a compass pointing to your dog’s location as well as his current status: whether he’s running, sitting, on point or treeing quarry.
The Garmin Astro is fully expandable, just add a DC-40 wireless collar transmitter for all your other dogs. You can track up to ten dogs at one time with Astro, at a distance of up to seven miles away (depending on terrain). The system transmits information by line-of-sight, so it reaches farthest in flat, open territory.
Astro boasts a high-sensitivity GPS receiver that can track your dog’s position even in the densest cover. The Astro also has a map page to illustrate where a dog is and where it has been – in relation to the hunter – and allows hunters to determine if they have covered nearby ground. Astro can also sound an alarm to let you know instantly when your dog goes on point.
Count Your Coveys
Garmin’s unique Covey Counter™ lets hunters mark the precise location, time of day, and elevation where they encountered their quarry – and users can easily note the number of birds flushed and how many were taken from that location.
Astro lets you save other special waypoints, such as "Truck" and "Lodge," so you can save the location of these places quickly and easily for each hunt. Astro also offers special waypoint icons to represent food plots, tree stands and other hunting-related points.
Experience Full Featured GPS
Astro shines when you’re out on the hunt, but it also excels in getting you back to your truck at the end of the day, or even back home again. In fact, the Astro handheld has all the features of Garmin’s top-line handheld outdoor devices, including a barometric altimeter, electronic compass, microSD™ card slot, celestial information, area calculator and rugged, IPX7 waterproof exterior.
The Astro has a microSD card slot that allows users to insert optional pre-programmed topo maps or road maps, which can be invaluable in an unfamiliar area. Highly-detailed 24K topo maps give hunters an idea of the most productive areas to hunt, while road maps feature the same basic functions as an automotive GPS navigation unit – even in rural areas. With optional detailed city street maps, you can search for over 6 million points of interest and create a route on roads with exact turn-by-turn directions to motels, gas stations, restaurants, and even veterinarians.
Battery life is 17-48 hours (based on update rate) on the rechargeable DC 40 collar and 24 hours on the Astro 220 receiver, which is powered by two AA batteries. Both the DC 40 collar and the Astro 220 receiver are waterproof.
DC 40 improvements over the DC 30
The charging connection has been completely redesigned, with the charger clamping around a housing that has no recessed areas for mud to accumulate. Even the LED charging light on the collar has been reconfigured to flash while charging, and glow solid when fully charged.
The new DC 40 has an integrated GPS transmitter mounted on a durable one-inch orange polyurethane coated collar strap, and the small black GPS puck that used to ride on the top of the collar is now integrated into the unit’s main housing. As a result, owners can combine the DC 40 with most standard e-collar receivers – eliminating the need to put two separate collars on a dog.
Another new feature of the DC 40 is Collar Lock – an option that lets users create a four-digit PIN number that helps prevent others from seeing their dog’s whereabouts. That’s a feature that field trial judges will find useful to ensure that an Astro is used only as a recovery tool when a dog in competition becomes lost.
The new DC 40 collar is included as part of the Astro 220 GPS Dog Tracking system. For those wishing to upgrade from a previous generation of collar, the DC 40 can be purchased separately. The older DC 30 collar is scheduled to be discontinued on 11-30-10.
